This Scouting Life

It was Saturday lunchtime when the trail crossed Ironwood Lane, a couple miles south of the Cienaga Creek Ranch and a day’s hike away from Big Bear Lake. Dad and I were both ready for some fresh food. So we felt pretty lucky to see some trail angels handing out fresh fruit and sandwiches to hikers. We stopped and found out they were scouts!

I’m a scout too, with Troop 570 in Washington. I really like it. I just started learning the trumpet last year, and I’m now the troop bugler. I do my best :). So it was cool to meet other scouts on the trail. We ate and talked and relaxed in a chair in the shade. I felt so refreshed afterwards. I’m not sure that trail angels realize just how awesome they are, and how good they make us feel. We’ve met so many great people already and I can’t imagine having as much fun on the trail without them. But it is still special to me to meet scouts as trail angels. Maybe next summer, when I am not hiking the PCT, I will still get to be a part of it all, sitting by the trail and handing out sandwiches, drinks, and fresh fruit with a smile.

Thanks for a fantastic lunch, guys!
