Cowboy Camping

Cowboy camping means sleeping without a tent or a tarp. It saves a fair bit of time and effort at either end of the day, and it is pretty cool to sleep under the stars. This would be pretty uncomfortable if it was raining or snowing, but we haven’t had anything close to that in the desert section of the PCT. The most uncomfortable nights we have had are from the wind, but it was so strong that I think our tarp, if we had put it up, would have just blown away.

Most nights it has been getting down to the mid thirties (freezing), and perhaps a tent would be more comfortable. But I have been wearing a down-filled puffy hood and it has kept out the cold, the wind, and the stuff blowing in the wind. I would say our set up has worked really well, and I have not missed having a tent or a tarp.

Me with my down hood, great for keeping out wind and cold.

If anyone has specific questions about the sleep system my Dad put together, write in on the sign-up form and I’ll get back you as quick as I can.
