Ready… Set… Campo!

The town of Campo is a mile or so north of the Mexico border, but the trail head monument is right on the border. John, our friendly trail angel and driver, took us right to the monument to be checked in with volunteers from the Pacific Crest Trail Association. When our permits were checked, we had some kind of zip tie thing attached to our packs to let rangers along the trail know we were permitted without having to stop and bother us. I think that’s a great system because I’m pretty sure I would lose a piece of paper at some point during our hike!

The rangers gave us a short pep talk about the trail, telling us to be safe and stay hydrated. It turns out an awful lot of people have to be rescued within a couple days of starting! I hope I’m not one of them! My Dad has been so careful and meticulous, with spreadsheets for every little detail, that I am actually very confident about finishing the PCT. Thanks, Dad!

We took some photos at the monument, and Canada sure looks a long way away from here. 2650 miles. After months of preparation, gear testing and training hikes, I am very eager to get past Mile 1 finally, and be underway!
