My second wildlife encounter was this cute horned lizard. I am not sure the variety, but I think it is a Coast Horned Lizard. They can be easy to miss because their camouflage is so good and they blend right in to the sides of the trail. I saw a few of them in between Lake Morena and Mt. Laguna. They look like they would have trouble moving with all their armor, but they could actually scuttle around super quick!
My second favorite thing to do on hikes is find wildlife. In the mountains in Washington there are lots of little mammals and frogs, but here in the desert there are different kinds of cool animals that I have never seen before. Sometimes, to find them, you have to look pretty closely. And usually, there are more animals to find where there is water.

I stopped to look for critters in Kitchen Creek, just near Buckman Springs, but I didn’t spot anything. The water was cool and fun to play in anyway.
