Setting Out

After lots of photos at the Southern Terminus monument, it was time to head out. The trail is sandy and rocky, and the vegetation scrubby. I’m sure it gets hotter than the mid-80s that we were hiking in, but coming from the Pacific Northwest, the air felt dry and hot.

We planned our first stop to be Lake Morena. It looks to be about a 20-mile hike on the map, but the trail was so very twisty that it felt like more than that. I was pretty tired when we finally stopped for the day. Dad planned our first re-supply to be at Mt. Laguna, after three days of hiking, so we didn’t have to carry too much food on our first few days. Still, with all the water we had to carry and no trail-legs (yet), my pack felt pretty heavy.
