Trail Names

Trail names are a tradition on the PCT. A trail name is given to you, usually by other hikers, describing something unique or special or funny about you. It could reference something you did or regularly do.

Today we met “Cheez-Its” at the Mt. Laguna post office. He just completed the Arizona trail, and is on his 6th attempt at a PCT thru-hike. His determination and humble reverence for the PCT isn’t in his trail name, Cheez-Its. When we met him he was sitting in the shade of the post office’s out house eating Cheez-Its with a spoon, so his hands don’t get cheesy. We didn’t ask him why that was him trail name. It appeared obvious. And memorable. Mention Cheez-Its to any hiker starting in May, and they will know who you’re talking about. I enjoyed talking to you, Cheez-Its. Good luck and happy trails!
