Tricky Trail

The trail got really fun climbing up into the mountains south of Idyllwild. Yes there were old burn areas, but it seemed to be coming back. There were lots of huge boulders that the trail kind of curled around. Just when it seemed we had lost the trail or couldn’t get around an especially big rock, we’d find it again. I can’t imagine trying to follow the trail in the snow. With Dad, the tricky trail was just fun. I think maybe we were both distracted by the views. The trail runs for a long time along ridges, and the views in every direction were awesome.

Beautiful rocks and burn areas that seem to be recovering made terrific hiking.

The weather got hot during the day, up into the low 90s. We were in such a hurry though that we didn’t dry our feet often enough and my Dad started to get blisters. But nothing was going to stop us from getting into Idyllwild on schedule! At one point on the trail we found a tiny patch of snow still surviving in the heat, and we put blocks of it in our hats to help cool us down. It worked really well.

It got hot but the trail provided… snow!

Apart from Dad’s feet really hurting him, I really enjoyed this part of the hike. It was really rugged and different from other parts of the trail so far – and even though it was just a small patch, the snow was kind of amazing. Next stop, Idyllwild!
